The Last Air Bender is basically a coming of age story even though some of the characters are pretty young. It tells the story of four nations, each with a unique set of talents called bending. The fire nation, water tribe, earth kingdom and the air nomads are respectively known for people possessing fire bending, water bending, earth bending and air bending abilities.
But there is one person who can master all the four elements. This is the avatar. He or she is tasked with the job of bringing peace into the world. But in this story, the avatar has not been seen for a hundred years.
The first food moment
The first food moments starts with two water tribe siblings fishing for food. Sokka (Jack Desena) and Katara (Mae Whitman) get into an argument early on when Katara water bends to get fish and ends up soaking her brother with water. The argument escalates when their boat goes off course and it becomes clear that the siblings parents are not around. Over the course of the story, searching for food is a theme that reoccurs over and over.
Katara lets Sokka have it and ends up water bending a sphere out of the water.
Enter Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen).
Aang is the avatar. He was lost for 100 years but now he’s back and it is his duty to bring back the peace that’s been lost due to the fire nation unleashing war on the other nations. But the thing is Aang only knows to air bend. In fact, he is the last air bender. He still has to master the other elements and he has to do this as he is being pursued and before the fire lord manages to eliminate all the other nations. Oh yeah, he’s only twelve years old, no pressure!
The second food moment
The story moves over to a ship and we meet prince Zuko (Dante Basco) of the fire nation and his uncle the former general Iroh (Mako Iwamatsu) who is busy playing a game while drinking jasmine tea. As the story continues, it becomes clear that tea drinking is something the former general holds dear. He offers his nephew tea to ‘calm’ him down. But Zuko angrily rejects it and is eager to go on his search for the avatar.
Zuko needs to capture the avatar in order to regain his honor. And as such, he doesn’t let anything stand in his way. But the avatar is not going to surrender easily.
The third food moment
The third food moment showcases prince Zuko busy training his fire bending moves. He argues that he is ready to move on to the next level of training but his uncle does not think so. But Zuko is insistent that he needs to learn more advanced forms of fire bending if he is to capture the avatar. His uncle agrees to teach him but he insists that he must first finish his roast duck.
Food is something the general uses to delay things and teach patience as the story progresses.
All in all, if you are looking for an animation that is entertaining as well as educating, the last air bender should be on your list. It doesn’t disappoint.
